Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement Isle of Man is an educational charity that works across all primary and secondary schools. Since the late 1980s, Junior Achievement have been providing financial literacy, employability and entrepreneurship education to students in the Isle of Man. We support students from Year 5 through to Year 13. They offer schools several learning initiatives including the Junior Achievement Company Programme supported by HSBC Bank. It allows students to experience what it is like to run their own business in the safety of a school environment. This programme has proved invaluable for young people who for the last three years have had no work experience and no exams due to the pandemic. During the last academic year, 145 students signed up to take part in this programme from all five high schools. What makes this programme unique is that we have a team of volunteer business mentors who dedicate their time to working with the students. At the end of the programme, 98% of students stated the programme has given them the courage to keep going even when faced with challenges.

WINNER: Young Engineers

Young Engineers (IoM) Ltd is an Educational Company that started in November 2021. They provide revolutionary educational programmes that utilise an engaging, hands-on learning experience to teach children the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering, Programming and Robotics. Young Engineers have created opportunities to support STEM development both within and outside the classroom. This is important, particularly as future employers are wanting more STEM-based skills. Schools value the opportunity to have STEM taught regularly and are asking for support and opportunities for further STEM programmes on our island. Participants learn about many different topics and concepts which include the laws of physics, centrifugal force, centripetal force, inertia, kinetic energy, potential energy, lift force, torque, leverage points, angular momentum and more! Students are also equipped with the professional skills necessary for understanding the logic behind almost any coding language that exists today, along with the necessary mathematical skills required in making the scientific calculations needed to build their models. From January of the 2021/22 Academic Year, Young Engineers (IoM) provided 22 Schools with free STEM Sessions, which opened the door to providing 14 Schools with Extra STEM Sessions and eventually enabled the completion of 9, 6-Week STEM Workshops. Approximately 1,000 school children were allowed to discover their engineering potential and become aware of potential careers they can pursue in engineering.
